Before your first gathering

Questions & answers

A guide to membership, participation and the monthly gathering.

What happens at a Vi-Per gathering?

Each gathering centres on a discussion of the month’s book, accompanied by coffee and an exchange of perspectives. Once the discussion concludes, voting opens for 15 minutes to select the winning song-and-quote pairing. The winner is then announced and introduces their chosen book for the following month.

Can I attend on my own?

Certainly. Vi-Per was founded by an individual seeking others with whom to discuss literature. Independent participation is central to that spirit. Members are equally welcome to attend alone or with company.

Do I need to finish the book before attending?

Completing the book is strongly encouraged, as it allows for fuller participation in the discussion. Conversations may address the entire work, including its ending.

Members must have read at least 70% of the book to submit a pairing or vote on submitted entries.

Are all discussions conducted in English?

Yes. English is the shared language of the club’s discussions. Neither academic expertise nor specialist literary knowledge is required. Thoughtful contributions, attentive listening and a willingness to consider different perspectives are valued.

Is submitting a song-and-quote pairing compulsory?

No. Submissions are optional. Members are welcome to attend and contribute to the discussion without submitting a pairing.

How do I become a member, and does registration reserve a seat?

Membership can be arranged by contacting us directly on Instagram or completing the website’s registration form. Website registrations must be confirmed through the email provided to complete the process.

Membership does not constitute a seat reservation. In-person attendance must be confirmed separately before each gathering. As places are limited, please contact us on Instagram well in advance.

Where and when are gatherings held?

Gatherings take place once a month, typically on a Sunday, at a designated location. The date, time and location are published on the This Month page. The Add to calendar option allows you to save the event to your calendar.

Online participation is also available through a private meeting link distributed by email.

Can I participate online or from outside Cyprus?

Yes. Online participation allows members outside Limassol and Cyprus to take part in the discussion.

When registering, select Online or Both, opt into email updates and confirm your email address. Meeting announcements will include the private online access link. Members joining from abroad should check the meeting time against their local time zone.

Is there a membership or attendance fee?

There is currently no membership or attendance fee for Vi-Per Book Club.

How is the next book selected?

At the conclusion of each gathering, members vote for their preferred song-and-quote pairing. Voting remains open for 15 minutes. The member whose pairing receives the most votes selects the book for the following month.

How can I submit writing to Margins? Must it relate to the current book?

Margins welcomes original essays, reflections, reviews, poems, short fiction and responses. Submissions need not relate to the current book.

Each piece should be no longer than 500 words, approximately one A5 page. Multiple submissions are welcome, with each piece submitted separately. All work is reviewed before publication.

The private submission link is shared by message or email following registration.

How will I receive updates and meeting information?

To receive book announcements and meeting details, select the email updates option during registration and confirm your email address. Members who select Online or Both will also receive the private online meeting link in the relevant announcement.

Members may also contact us on Instagram to request access to the club’s group chat, where updates and conversations continue between gatherings.
