“Corruption in humans is same as compassion in God. Corruption's our only hope. Long as we have it there 'll be lenient sentences and even an innocent man 'll have a change of being left off.”

I never considered corruption or coercion as a form of mercy or compassion. The sharpest part is “even an innocent man.” An innocent person should be freed because justice works. Brecht imagines a system in which innocence offers so little protection that corruption might provide a better chance. The disturbing implication is that mercy can depend on the failure of the very system meant to deliver justice.
